Historic Cooper River Bridge

This is a picture of an old postcard given to us by a native to the area.  The photo was taken around July 7, 1929 of the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge over the Cooper River connecting Charleston and Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

“Constructed in 18 months by a private company, the bridge cost nearly $6 million.  Originally a toll bridge, it was the largest and longest of its type in the world when completed, spanning two miles from shore-to-shore with a high point of 270.2 feet above mean low tide.  Photo included in “A Photographic Record of the Construction of The Cooper River Bridge, Charleston, South Carolina ~ 1928-9”, a part of the Charleston County Public Library collection.

The bridge has since been demolished and replaced with the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge (shown below):
